School Bus Stops and Riding Tips

School Bus Stops and Riding Tips

These Tips Are Brought To You By….

It’s time to pull out those backpacks and shop for school supplies. Back-to-school season is upon us and the first day of school is right around the corner. That means buses will be back on the road getting ready for their new routes, too. School bus safety is important to practice to keep everyone safe. Here are some best practices to make bus transportation safer.

Tips for Bus Riders

Get On and Off The Bus Safely

When the bus arrives, be sure your child knows to wait for it to come to a complete stop before approaching. The driver will usually signal that it is okay for the child to enter. Have them utilize the handrails as well for assistance going up and down the steps. When the bus stops to drop your child off, they should wait for it to come to a complete stop before standing up and wait for the driver’s signal to exit.

Be Cautious Around Buses

Children do not need to walk behind school buses. If they are required to cross the street to get on the bus, have them make eye contact with the driver who will signal them across while other cars are stopped. They should take 5 giant steps in front of the bus for adequate room to cross and for the driver to see them. Most buses have an extension arm that comes out to assist in this. If they drop anything around or under the bus, have them let the driver know immediately instead of trying to retrieve it themselves.

Practice Proper Behavior On The Bus

Teach children to behave correctly for the benefit of the driver and themselves. Jumping up and down, making loud noises, or putting arms out the window could distract the driver and endanger the passengers. Allow the driver to focus on the road by remaining calm and keeping noise to a minimum.

When students are educated on bus safety, they will be more confident about riding the bus and parents will feel a little relief. Remember to keep these tips in mind on the first day of school and every day after!
