Many pests hibernate during the winter, especially flying insects such as mosquitoes and flies, but others are always on the lookout for a cozy, warm place. Most of the time, that place is your home. Raccoons
Raccoons are a common home pest in our area, especially if you live near heavily wooded areas. They get in through chimneys or roof openings in attic areas. Raccoons can spread roundworm, leptospirosis and even rabies.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches live in small, dark areas close to food and moisture. In other words, they love your kitchen! Cockroaches can hitch a ride into your home in everything from grocery bags and secondhand appliances to boxes and furniture. It only takes a few cockroaches in your home to start an infestation.
Spiders
Spiders are especially common in the CSRA – and they are dangerous! If you get bitten by one, you might not feel it immediately, but left untreated, a brown recluse bite will damage and kill skin and muscle tissue. These spiders typically spin webs in undisturbed places such as closets, basements, and attics. They also hide in cardboard boxes and among stacks of clothing, linens and such.
Rodents
Rodents, such as common house mice and rats, love to nest in dark areas that are secluded, such as your basement or attic. They can get in your home through very small openings and chew through walls, wires, pipes, and insulation while spreading disease.
If you remove entry points, food, and hiding spaces, these pests are more likely to leave you alone. Make sure clutter, shrubs, and vegetation are not close to your home. Store linens, clothing, and shoes in plastic containers. Vacuum frequently and clean regularly under appliances and sinks. Keep crumbs off of floors and countertops.
