Aiken Civic Ballet Presents…La Boutique Fantasque!
La Boutique Fantasque (the magic of fantastic toyshop) is a ballet first performed in London in 1919 by Ballet Russes (a ballet troupe that trained in Paris and danced throughout Europe) with choreography by Léonide Massine and music by Ottorino Respighi based on piano pieces by Gioachino Rossini (Diane choreographed our version). It is the story of a toymaker who creates lovely dolls and toys for his shop. Customers come from far and wide to buy his wares. Every night when the toymaker leaves, the toys come alive. A pair of particularly beautiful can-can dolls fall in love. When they are sold to two different families, the toys come up with a scheme to hide the dolls so they won’t be separated. When the families arrive to pick up the dolls and they are nowhere to be found, the families become irate with the shopkeeper, a fight ensues, and the toys come alive to defend the toymaker. All ends well when the can can dolls are reunited and join the toymaker and the other dolls and toys in a joyful celebration. This one has something for everyone – enchanted dolls and toys, can can dancers, a celebration, a fight, and a happy ending!
